Guard Line Helps Guard Against Changing Safety Dilemmas
Wolfe
Machinery Co. is helping firms Nationwide, to prevent accidents and
lawsuits by keeping up with today's stricter workplace safety
standards set by OSHA, ANSI and insurance providers.
In response to
customers' growing concern about unauthorized people operating
potentially dangerous equipment, Wolfe Machinery designed the
inexpensive and practical Wolfe Guard Limited Access Systems. These
units cost effectively give managers control over who can run trash
compactors, grinders, saws, drills, forklifts, cranes, production
machinery, presses, vehicles and more.
All Wolfe Guard units
are fairly easy to install, requiring no retrofitting. They
"require little space, cost hardly anything to operate and
provide an immense measure of safety and peace of mind to
supervisors," says company founder and owner Chuck Wolfe.
"At a lot of the places today, you can still walk up to a
machine, push a button and operate it," says Wolfe. This poses
big safety and liability problems.
With the Wolfe Guard
units, authorized users must enter a correct 4-digit code prior to
starting. When the keypad's green light indicates the equipment can
start. This technology will work on magnetic starters, line voltage
up to 240 VAC, or both. For user convenience, restarting without
re-keying the code is possible for a short time after each turnoff.
The system resets itself if not started within 20 seconds and an
access code is again required for start-up.
Some can continuously
log operators and the time and length of their usage. To endure
harsh industrial environments, they are enclosed in steel and
feature a non-volatile memory. For energy conservation and added
security, a programmable timer is also available to automatically
shut down engines left idling too long.
American Airlines in
Chicago, United Airlines in San Francisco and Continental in Houston
are using Wolfe Guard units on their high-speed tugs and other
ground hauling vehicles. Lumberyards and home centers including
Scotty's, Payless Cashway, Home Depot, and Builders Square use
models with an electronic safety braking option on woodworking saws
in their stores. Other Wolfe Guard Limited Access users include
construction industry contractors, utility firms, saw mills, food
processors and distributors, manufacturers, and warehouse managers.
